So I’ve been sitting on the last three episodes of Gokaiger for nearly two months now, waiting for the right combination of nothing-to-do and nice weather. Today was that day, and I happily sat in my parents garden watching the grand finale of Gokaiger with the rabbits and the families guinea pigs running around their respective outdoor runs.
I have to say, I expected a lot of the finale, and it delivered. I loved the cameos, I loved the action scenes, and I think most of all I loved the sense of pride I felt in these fictional defenders of Earth, and even more greatly the people of Earth itself.
Super Sentai really manages to remind you that people have been fighting through difficulties for a long time, not exactly the monsters and evil forces seen in these children’s shows, but horrible disasters that we can’t really do anything to stop completely. But we still fight through these times, and we recover, and we learn and make sure the next disaster doesn’t destroy our spirit or ability to carry on.
In this fictional world, the Gokaigers manage to defeat the enemy and put a stop to the Zangyak invasion of earth, lighting the spark that will end their tyrannical rule of the entire universe. While we don’t really have super powered teams of space pirates defending us, and stopping earthquakes, floods and famine completely isn’t as easy as destroying the emperor of the enemy armada, we do see a glimpse of what can be done in these times of difficulty. We see the past heroes, powerless, but still helping. The previous Sentai are hard at work helping trapped casualties, getting children to safety, and generally keeping a calm head and making sure they do their best.
These episodes really lifted my spirits, and I expected nothing less. For a series that has been showy from the start, this was definitely a worthy end.
